“I have clients that are feeding their cows on 22KgDm/day and they are pumping out 440kg/MS (all grass). Which is right up there and that is because of the C-Dax Pasture Meter and the way they use the data.”

Donald Martin from Wyndham runs a successful business called GrassCo where the C-Dax Pasture Meter plays a vital role.

Grass Co was started in 2008 with Donald working weekends with a grass probe but an accident on a quad bike left him on ACC for 16 months and out of work. Having had an interest in dry matter and feed budgets for over 20 years he decided to put his knowledge and skills to good use and purchased a C-Dax Pasture Meter to get his business back up and running. “The biggest problem when you are running a farm is you don’t have time to collect the data to put in the feed budget. That is where I saw the opening to collect the data so farmers can do their own management as they are the best people to run there own properties.”

Donald’s hard work and positive attitude after his accident has seen his business go from 1 client to 11 in just over a year and cover up to 700ha and 160km a day. In order for GrassCo to cover the distances required and to quickly provide reliable and accurate data for his clients C-Dax Pasture Meter was the only choice. All of GrassCo’s clients had previously been using rising plate meters which took up a lot of time and resources.

The C-Dax Pasture Meter’s high strength design means it’s able to cover the ground at speeds of 20kph while reading 200 measurements per second—that’s 18,500 readings over a single 500m pass—compared with a rising plate meter would be 250 reading over the same distance.

“The C-Dax Pasture Meter is so simple and easy to use” says Donald, and because of that he is able to quickly supply his clients with consistently accurate and easy to read, no nonsense data from post-grazing residuals that can then be utilised to make quick and effective on-farm decisions.

“The data that the meter is putting out is spot on and with GPS things are going very well”. Donald is able to utilise the GPS mapping system to ensure comparable results for each run are easily achieved “…it makes a line on the screen that I follow every time I do a run on the farm“.

GrassCo and the C-Dax Pasture Meter are helping deliver outstanding results to its farmers:
